The design is attributed to James McNeill Whistler, who spent part of the early 1850s as a cadet at West Point before he was dismissed without graduating, which gives this sheet-music cover an unusual link to a later famous painter. The lithograph marks the graduating class of 1855 and was printed by Sarony & Co. of New York for the publisher C.L. Lazarus. Covers like this were a popular way for families to keep a memento of a school or patriotic occasion, and the cadets themselves are the subject of the scene.
