Its title, *Specie claws*, points to the hard-money fight that gripped the country after the Panic of 1837. The satire centers on Martin Van Buren, who took office in 1837 and inherited the Specie Circular of 1836, which required payment for public lands in gold and silver. H.R. Robinson printed and published the lithograph in New York, and watercolor was added by hand. The caricature also reflects the Equal Rights Party, the New York faction of Democrats known as Locofocos, who opposed banks and paper money.
