Few pictures of the White House are taken from above, and this one was made from the air by the Photo Section at Bolling Field, the Army aviation base across the Anacostia River in Washington. Aerial photography was still new in the 1910s and 1920s, and military units used it to map terrain and document installations from the sky. Seen from above, the executive mansion sits within its grounds and the surrounding streets of the city, showing how the capital's layout looked before wider highways and later buildings changed the area. The record dates the print only tentatively, so the exact year of exposure is uncertain.
