Royalty in the audience is the detail that sets this sheet apart from other theatrical posters of the period. Its record notes the Duke and Duchess of York at the Adelphi theater in London during the play's long run there. William Gillette's *Secret Service* is a Civil War drama about Union espionage in Richmond, Virginia, and the poster's military figures and pointing fingers reflect that story. The lithograph was printed by the Strobridge Lithographing Company, a Cincinnati and New York firm known for bold, colorful theatrical advertising in the 1890s.
