A portrait of Capt. Harry Martel Gwyne, dated February 13, 1923, survives here as a small glass negative. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., firm active in the early twentieth century, produced many studio and press portraits of officers, officials, and other public figures, and this collection reached the Library of Congress partly through a 1947 gift from Herbert A. French. The name and date come from caption information on the negative or its sleeve and have not been independently verified. The streaks and blemishes visible on the glass are typical of deterioration in the original emulsion coatings.
