This 1917 color lithograph is a German wartime appeal for money to buy books and other reading material for soldiers in the army and navy, and its title names the "Deutsche Volksspende" as the fundraising drive behind it. The poster shows soldiers in France reading, a scene meant to make the case that a few marks could keep men at the front supplied with something to read during long stretches of waiting. Its subjects also point to the wider home-front effort, as civilians were asked to give to support troops during the First World War. The poster was produced in Berlin by a commercial lithography firm, which was common for wartime publicity.
