Thomas Jefferson's home at Monticello supplied the model for this administration building, which was designed for the Jamestown Ter-centennial Exposition, held in 1907 near Norfolk, Virginia. The fair marked 300 years since English colonists founded Jamestown in 1607, and its planners leaned on Virginia's colonial and early republican past, so a building echoing Jefferson's domed, columned villa suited the theme. This photograph reproduces an architectural drawing rather than the finished building, and it was issued around 1906 by the Jamestown Official Photo Co., as the fair was being prepared. Such drawings show how exposition architects blended Virginia heritage with the classical styling that was popular at American world's fairs of the period.
