A caption beginning "Le capitaine Nemo" identifies this wood engraving as a scene featuring the enigmatic commander from Jules Verne's *Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea*, as it appeared on page 97 of an 1871 edition. Verne's novel, first published in French in the early 1870s, follows a scientist and his companions aboard the Nautilus, a submarine Nemo commands from hidden depths. The book's blend of undersea exploration and speculative technology helped make the submarine a staple of popular fiction, and its engraved illustrations shaped how readers imagined both the vessel and the strange life beneath the waves.
