Though its title is just "Washington," this aquatint is catalogued as a river view tied to Georgetown, the older Potomac port that stood beside the site chosen for the new federal capital. James Harrison published it in New York in 1795, when the city was still being surveyed and cleared and the nation's seat of government had not yet moved there. Aquatint, which builds tone through fine grains of resin rather than solid lines, gave engravers a softer, painterly effect well suited to landscape scenes like this one. The print was later shown in a 2002 exhibition on early Georgetown at Dumbarton House, a reminder of how closely the image is tied to that neighborhood's early history.
