Few cereal slogans have lasted as long as the boast printed on this Quaker box that its grains were "Shot From Guns." The phrase referred to the puffing method developed by Alexander P. Anderson, which heated grain under steam pressure in sealed cylinders and then released it so each kernel expanded several times its size. Quaker used the dramatic wording to make a humble grain sound like a feat of modern engineering, and the pitch became a staple of its advertising in the early twentieth century. The "Sparkies" name points to the crisp, popping texture the company was selling.
