Battle Creek in 1880 was a city of several thousand people in south-central Michigan, and the year coincided with the national census, which counted a steady rise in the state's towns as farmers' sons and daughters moved in for factory and shop work. Downtown was built up with brick commercial blocks, hotels, and churches, and the streets nearest the depot carried the bulk of the traffic. Surrounding farms still sent grain, livestock, and produce to the town's buyers, while the rail lines carried those goods to markets in Chicago and the East. People in the 1880s would have described the place as a practical railroad town on its way to becoming a regional center, with its pride tied to its schools, its congregations, and the new brick buildings going up along its main streets.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Battle Creek, Michigan, drawn in 1880. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
