In 1880, Ann Arbor was the Washtenaw County seat and a college town of roughly eight thousand residents, with the University of Michigan at its center. The university drew students from across the state and beyond, and its faculty, medical students, and growing number of women enrolled in its classes shaped the town's shops, boarding houses, and churches. Industry ran on the Huron River, where flour and lumber mills drew power from the dams, and the Michigan Central line gave local farmers and manufacturers a rail link to Detroit and Chicago. A map drawn that year would have shown residents a town still organized around its courthouse square, its campus, and the river.

| Notes | An original bird's-eye view map of Ann Arbor, Michigan, drawn in 1880. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
