Mount Clemens, the county seat of Macomb County, sat on the Clinton River about 25 miles northeast of Detroit when this bird's-eye view was drawn in 1881. The surrounding county was largely farmland, and the town's commerce served farm families who came in to trade, file deeds, and attend court. By the early 1880s, visitors were also coming for the mineral waters drawn from local wells, which had begun to draw a resort trade and bathing houses. The map shows a town still compact and close to its river, with its courthouse and the main commercial streets clearly laid out. Residents of that day would have known Mount Clemens as a county seat with a growing reputation as a place to take the waters.

| Notes | An original bird's-eye view map of Mt. Clemens, Michigan, drawn in 1881. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders. |
