Battle Creek, Michigan, in 1869 was a grain-milling and railroad town of a few thousand people, sitting where the Battle Creek River meets the Kalamazoo. Its growth followed the Michigan Central Railroad, which had brought freight and passengers through the town since the 1840s, and the mills along the water turned local wheat into flour for shipment east. Only a few years after the Civil War, the town was also home to the Seventh-day Adventist church, whose headquarters had moved there in 1855, and its health reform institute drew visitors seeking treatment. Residents of that period would have known Battle Creek first as a railroad stop and milling center, with its churches and institutions a growing part of its reputation.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Battle Creek, Michigan, drawn in 1869. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
