Battle Creek in 1870 was a small Michigan city still finding its footing after the Civil War, when Union veterans and families from farms across Calhoun County were settling into town jobs. The economy leaned on wheat, lumber, and the rail lines that carried goods out of the region, and foundries, wagon shops, and other small manufacturers supplied the surrounding farms. Residents in this decade would have measured their town by its railroad depot, its busy commercial blocks, and the steady stream of wagons bringing grain to be shipped. The map's careful street-by-street detail records a community that was expanding outward from its downtown along the river and rail corridors.

| Notes | An original bird's-eye view map of Battle Creek, Michigan, drawn in 1870. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
