Michigan City, Indiana, in 1869 was a small lakeshore town on Lake Michigan's southern shore, and its fortunes rested on water and rail. Its harbor at the mouth of Trail Creek handled lumber, grain, and other goods moving to and from Chicago and points east, and sawmills and shipping supported much of the local work. The Michigan Southern railroad had already linked the town to the wider Midwest, while the Indiana State Prison, opened on the town's north side in 1859, was among its best-known institutions. Residents of the period would have recognized the town first by its lakefront, its piers, and the sand dunes that bordered it.

| Notes | An original bird's-eye view map of Michigan City, Indiana, drawn in 1869. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders. |
