Attica, Indiana, sat on the Wabash River in Fountain County in 1869, and its fortunes still depended heavily on the water. The Wabash and Erie Canal had carried boats and trade through the valley in earlier decades, and grain, livestock and lumber moved out of the district by river and by the expanding railroads. Farmers from the surrounding prairie and bottomland drove into town to sell wheat and corn, while merchants on the main commercial streets supplied them with dry goods, hardware and farm tools. For the people who lived there, Attica was a practical river market where the landing and the depot together set the pace of daily business.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Attica, Indiana, drawn in 1869. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
