Tell City, Indiana, in 1870 was a young German-speaking river town on the Ohio in Perry County, founded only about a dozen years earlier by immigrants who had arrived under the auspices of a cooperative colony. Its residents built their livelihood on the river and on woodworking, and the community was known for its German singing societies, gymnastic clubs, and schools, which kept the old language and customs alive in a frontier setting. Steamboat landings tied the town to Louisville, Evansville, and other river markets, and goods moved in and out by water long before the region had dependable rail links. The town was still establishing its streets, churches, and civic institutions during these years, so a map of this kind records a settlement that had recently been laid out from farmland and was still taking shape.

| Notes | An original bird's-eye view map of Tell City, Indiana, drawn in 1870. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
