Terre Haute, on the Wabash River in western Indiana, was the seat of Vigo County in 1880, and its growth followed its railroads and river trade. Several lines met in the town, and its shops and freight yards employed many of its residents, while coal mines in the surrounding county sent fuel and cargo out along the tracks. Brick commercial blocks, churches and substantial homes lined its streets. Eugene V. Debs, born there in 1855, was then a young railroad worker in the city, beginning the labor organizing that would make his name nationally known.

| Notes | An original bird's-eye view map of Terre Haute, Indiana, drawn in 1880. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders. |
