South Bend, Indiana, in 1874 was still feeling the effects of the Panic of 1873, a financial collapse that closed banks and slowed orders at factories across the Midwest. Its manufacturers kept working anyway. James Oliver's chilled plow works, started in 1868, produced iron plows hardened to cut through prairie sod, and farmers across the Midwest bought them. The mills along the St. Joseph River and the foundries and frame houses shown in this view made up a town that depended on both the river and the rail lines for its trade. Residents would have talked as much about grain prices and the next season's plow orders as about the trains that carried their goods away.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of South Bend, Indiana, drawn in 1874. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
