Rendered in woodcut, this sheet belongs to a group of ocean surfaces that Vija Celmins made in the early 1990s, and it is numbered 12 of an edition of 50 and signed and dated in pencil. Celmins, a Latvian-born American artist, built these images around close attention to the texture of moving water, with no horizon, no sky, and no clear sense of scale, so the surface fills the entire sheet. The print was published by the Grenfell Press and printed by Leslie Miller, and the Library of Congress acquired it in 1993 through its Pennell Fund.
