Few images of Abraham Lincoln's final hours were drawn on the spot, and this small pencil sketch, measuring only about 9.6 by 15.4 centimeters, captures the scene in a quick, intimate way. Its title is inscribed beneath the image, which identifies the subject as the president's deathbed. Lincoln was shot at Ford's theater in Washington, D.C., on April 14, 1865, and died the next morning in a boarding house across the street, where the room was crowded with cabinet members, military officers and family. The drawing belongs to the Library of Congress's Civil War drawing collection, a group of works made during the conflict and its immediate aftermath.
