Currier & Ives issued this 1876 lithograph under the slogan "Centennial Bock Bier: The best can be had here," linking a German-style lager to the year of the nation's hundredth birthday. The New York firm was known for inexpensive popular prints, and in 1876 it produced many images tied to the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. Bock was a strong lager associated with German-American brewers, whose breweries were a large part of urban life in the 1870s. The print is a useful example of how commercial imagery borrowed the fair's patriotic moment to sell everyday goods.
