A temperance procession winding through Philadelphia on July 29, 1876, is the subject of this wood engraving, one of the many parades that filled the city during the Centennial year. That summer, Philadelphia was hosting the Centennial Exhibition in Fairmount Park, drawing crowds from across the country to mark the nation's hundredth birthday. Temperance societies, which had grown steadily since the 1870s, used such marches to show their numbers and press for limits on alcohol. Wood engravings like this one were commonly reproduced in illustrated weeklies, giving readers a view of street events they could not attend in person.
