Titled "Camp 100" for a stopping place on the Humboldt River in Nevada, this 1859 drawing shows a campsite on one of the main overland routes to California. The Humboldt valley was a crucial stretch of the emigrant trail, where travelers who had crossed the desert relied on its water and grass, and the "100" in the title likely refers to a numbered point along the route. The sheet combines graphite, ink, crayon and watercolor, and its subjects include covered wagons, cooking, and women at camp, which together give a rare domestic view of trail life from the gold rush years.
