This composite gathers five views on one sheet: Adolph Sutro himself, the tunnel entrance, a mule train, Sutro's mansion, and a machine shop. Together they tie the man to the project he championed. Sutro pushed for a drainage and access tunnel driven under the Comstock Lode, which ran beneath Virginia City, to drain flooded silver mines and carry ore out. Work on the tunnel stretched across the 1870s, and its mule-hauled traffic shows how much of the Comstock's industry still depended on animals and hand labor. The photographs were made by James H. Crockwell of Virginia City and reproduced by the Albertype Company in New York around 1890, and the sheet was issued in a souvenir album of the Comstock.
