The New Palace theater stood at the corner of Main and Gold Streets in downtown Hartford, Connecticut, and this ink drawing records its design as the building was planned in 1931. Architectural renderings like this one were prepared to guide construction and to show clients how a finished house would look from the street. The record places it among the Library of Congress's American Architecture and Engineering Drawings, a collection of plans and elevations gathered from across the country. Movie palaces of the early 1930s were built to be as much a spectacle as the films they showed, so the drawing offers a useful view of how a downtown theater presented itself to its audience.
