Asylum Street, one of downtown Hartford's main thoroughfares, is the setting for this 1921 ink drawing of the Majestic theater, which was drawn near its intersection with Haynes Street. Its survival in the Library of Congress's architecture, design and engineering holdings makes it a useful record of how a Connecticut movie house was planned in the early 1920s. That was a period when motion pictures were moving into purpose-built theaters, and downtown houses like this one were designed to draw large evening crowds. The drawing shows how the building was laid out on paper before construction.
