Few entertainers of the early 1920s drew bigger audiences than Al Jolson, and this glass negative, dated December 11, 1923, places his name in that moment at the height of his fame. Jolson was a leading Broadway and vaudeville star known for his energetic singing, and he later starred in *The Jazz Singer* (1927), the first feature-length film with synchronized speech and song. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio, produced portraits of visiting performers and public figures, so the plate belongs to that wider record of the period. The title comes from unverified data, and the glass shows streaks and blemishes from deterioration of its original coating.
