This color lithograph shows the northeast face of Design No. III, one of the country house plans in Charles Frederick Anderson's *Anderson's American Villa Architecture* (1853), where it appears on page 16. The book's houses were tied to the Hudson River, where wealthy New Yorkers were building villas in the picturesque styles Andrew Jackson Downing had popularized. Color plates like this one let prospective clients judge a building's massing, roof lines and ornament before committing to construction, and pattern books such as this one spread fashionable domestic design well beyond the cities where their architects worked.
