Frederic Remington's "Cowboys Coming to Town for Christmas" shows riders heading into a settlement for the holiday, a scene that captures the brief festive break cattle hands took after long months on the range. The wood engraving ran in Harper's Weekly on December 21, 1889, across two pages, at a time when the magazine was one of the most widely read illustrated weeklies in the country. Remington, who had made his reputation drawing the American West for eastern audiences, gave readers a picture of frontier life that was both lively and carefully observed. Engravings like this one reached households far from the plains and helped shape how Americans imagined the cowboy.
