The title asks viewers to buy War Savings Stamps so that "he" stays out of America, a line that ties a small personal purchase to keeping the enemy at a distance. Adolph Treidler, a commercial illustrator who produced many posters for the U.S. government during the First World War, made the lithograph in 1917, the year the Treasury began selling War Savings Stamps to fund the war effort. Posters like this one were pasted in post offices, banks, and shop windows to bring the war home to ordinary Americans, who were asked to lend money to the government through modest stamps as well as larger bonds.
