A spider spinning its web around a figure meant to be Kaiser Wilhelm II gives this Boston-printed poster its central image. The text warns Americans to keep quiet, since careless talk could carry information to enemy agents. German sabotage and espionage on American soil were real concerns during the war, heightened by the 1916 Black Tom explosion in New York Harbor, and Congress passed the Espionage Act in 1917. The poster, probably dating from around 1918, asked ordinary citizens to guard their speech as part of the war effort.
