An advertisement for the Equitable Mortgage Company, engraved and issued in New York by Baldwin & Gleason around 1888, uses a farm scene to sell the firm's lending business. In the 1880s, mortgage companies raised money from Eastern and European investors and lent it against farmland, especially in the expanding Midwest and West, so a rural image was a natural way to signal security and steady returns. The piece also shows how financial firms borrowed the visual language of agriculture to appeal to a public that often knew farming better than finance.
