Few places in the Civil War were fought over as often as the Shenandoah Valley, yet this lithograph presents it as a calm, pastoral landscape. Published by Currier & Ives in New York around 1864, the print was designed by Frances F. Palmer, one of the firm's leading landscape artists, and its hand coloring gave the scene the soft greens and blues that buyers of the day expected. The timing is striking, since armies crossed the valley's farms and towns repeatedly in 1864. Today the image reads as a portrait of a countryside that was being contested at the very moment it was printed.
