Railroad stations and hotels are the features this bird's-eye view of Staunton, Virginia, singles out, setting a town of the 1850s around its new transportation and lodging. Edward Beyer, a German-born artist who traveled through Virginia recording its towns, drew the scene, and William Rau produced the lithograph, which was then colored by hand. Staunton, the seat of Augusta County in the Shenandoah Valley, gained rail service in the mid-1850s, and the elevated perspective lets viewers trace how the lines and hotels fit into the town's streets.
