Its title turns the Declaration of Independence's line that all men are created equal into a joke about footwear, with the trailing "but not...shoes" suggesting that equality stops at the shoe store. Uncle Sam, the national figure who had become a staple of commercial art by 1910, lends the sales pitch a patriotic air, a tactic advertisers of the period used often. The poster was copyrighted by the S.S. System of Chicago, though details of its origin come from an older caption card and have not been fully verified.
