Little beyond its title survives for this glass negative, catalogued only as "Roosevelt," and that name comes from unverified notes on the negative or its caption cards. The Bain News Service, founded by George Grantham Bain in New York around 1899, supplied newspapers with pictures of politicians, performers and current events, and its glass negatives were usually made by press photographers working on deadline. Theodore Roosevelt, president from 1901 to 1909, was among the most photographed men of his time, so the board's attribution fits the period, though the record does not confirm the sitter or the occasion.
