Little is recorded about this exposure, which survives only as a glass negative captioned with the single word "Roosevelt." That title came from the Bain News Service and has not been verified. The negative belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of news photographs made by a New York picture agency that supplied newspapers in the early twentieth century. Because the negative is undated, its exact moment is uncertain, though it fits the years when Theodore Roosevelt, president from 1901 to 1909, was a frequent subject for press photographers. The attribution to him should be read as likely rather than confirmed.
