Paul von Hindenburg is the subject here, the German field marshal whose portrait appears on a glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection. Bain News Service, a Manhattan picture agency, made and distributed images like this one to newspapers and magazines in the early twentieth century, and the title comes from caption cards that the agency wrote, not from a verified record. Hindenburg rose to fame as a commander in the First World War and later served as president of the Weimar Republic from 1925 until his death in 1934. The glass plate format was standard for news photography of that era, so the image offers a direct look at how wartime and interwar leaders were pictured for American readers.
