This glass negative is titled "Von Gallwitz," a name that most likely refers to Max von Gallwitz, a German general who commanded troops on the Eastern front and in the 1915 campaign against Serbia during the First World War. The Library of Congress notes that the identification comes from unverified data on the negative or its caption card, so the sitter should be treated as provisional. The Bain News Service, a New York agency that sold news photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century, made and distributed such images, which were often rushed into print when a military figure was in the headlines.
