This color poster advertising Rowntree's Elect Cocoa was made by the Beggarstaff Brothers, the partnership of William Nicholson and James Pryde, and dates to London in 1895. Rowntree's was a Quaker family firm based in York and a leading British maker of cocoa and chocolate. The Beggarstaffs favored flat, bold shapes with little modeling, an approach influenced by Japanese woodblock prints, and their simplified style helped spark a wave of poster art in London during the 1890s. The piece shows how commercial advertising was becoming a serious form of modern graphic design.
