Columbus, Wisconsin, in 1868 was a town of mills and workshops on the Crawfish River in Columbia County, where waterpower had drawn settlers since the 1840s. German immigrants made up a large part of its population, and their churches and social societies shaped much of daily life. A railroad line reached the town by the late 1850s, carrying grain, lumber, and manufactured goods toward Milwaukee. Only a few years after the Civil War ended, residents were rebuilding their civic life, and this map records the streets, shops, and homes they would have known as their own town.

| Notes | An original bird's-eye view map of Columbus, Wisconsin, drawn in 1868. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders. |
