Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, in 1886 was a lumber town built around the falls of the Chippewa River in the northwest of the state. Sawmills and lumber yards along the water turned logs cut from the surrounding pine forests into boards that moved downriver and onward by rail, and the town's fortunes rose and fell with that trade. Breweries, including the one Jacob Leinenkugel had founded in the 1860s, also served a population of mill hands, lumbermen, and immigrant families. Residents knew their town as one of the busy river communities of the Chippewa Valley, a short distance from Eau Claire, where the logging boom brought wealth to a few and hard, seasonal work to many.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, drawn in 1886. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
