Delavan, Wisconsin, in 1884 was a small town in Walworth County, shaped by the railroad that ran through it and by the lake on its edge that drew summer visitors. Farming dominated the surrounding countryside, and by the 1880s the town was known for its strawberry fields, which shipped fruit to markets well beyond the county. Life centered on the commercial blocks along the main streets, the churches and schools, and a few hotels that served lakeside guests. Residents of that decade would have known Delavan as a market and resort town where farming, rail shipping and lake recreation came together.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Delvan, Wisconsin, drawn in 1884. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders.
