The Comstock Lode, in what is now western Nevada, was among the richest silver and gold deposits ever found in the United States, and mining there transformed a sparsely settled region almost overnight after its discovery in 1859. Work at the site meant deep shafts, timbered tunnels, and constant danger from cave-ins, flooding, and heat, while the ore fed mills and a rapidly growing population in nearby towns such as Virginia City. Images like this one help show how a remote hillside became the center of a booming industrial economy, and they remain valuable records of the labor that powered it.
