The Comstock Lode, under what is now Virginia City in western Nevada, was one of the first major silver discoveries in the United States, and mining there drew thousands of prospectors and workers into the Sierra Nevada during the 1860s and 1870s. Work underground was dangerous and hot, with miners cutting ore by hand and timbering shafts to hold back the rock, while the hoisting works and stamp mills at the surface processed what they brought up. The district's boom reshaped the region's economy and its towns, and it helped drive the growth of deep mining technology that later shaped hard-rock mining across the West.
