The title on this poster is left blank. Pupils were to letter their own school's name at the top, under a teacher's direction, so each finished copy named a particular school. Issued in 1919, it promoted the Junior Red Cross, a program the American Red Cross founded in 1917 to enlist schoolchildren in wartime service, such as making bandages and comfort items for soldiers. The printed instructions show how enrollment was staged as a school event, tied to Lincoln's and Washington's birthdays, with children pasting figures above the word "Members" to tally recruits.
