Here the Army of the Potomac marches past the reviewing stand on May 23, 1865, during the first of two days of victory parades in the capital. The stand stood before the White House, where President Andrew Johnson and General Ulysses S. Grant watched tens of thousands of soldiers pass along Pennsylvania Avenue. The war had ended in April, so the review marked the army's formal homecoming and a moment of public relief. Published by Casimir Bohn in Washington and printed in color by E. Sachse & Co. of Boston, the lithograph was one of many commemorative sheets issued afterward.
