Albert Einstein is the subject here, though the record offers little else: no date, no photographer, and a title taken from unverified notes made by the Bain News Service, the New York agency whose glass negatives fill the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress. Bain's staff worked quickly, often photographing public figures at events and in studios for newspaper use in the early 1900s, so the plate likely reflects that routine newsroom practice. Einstein was among the most photographed scientists of his era, and his public image was shaped in large part by pictures like these. The glass plate itself is a fragile record of how such images were made and circulated.
